MetroWest Villages & Towns - Sudbury
Sudbury was incorporated in 1639. At that time, Sudbury included Wayland and parts of what are now Framingham, Marlboro, Stow and Maynard. It’s central location between Boston and Worcester coupled with a Ratheon research facility led to Sudbury’s population boom in the mid 1950s. Today, just under 19,000 people live within just over 6,000 households in Sudbury with median home values hovering a touch under $800,000. Of these, 91% own their home while 9% rent (1).
While many of Sudbury’s residents commute to Worcester and Boston for work, the largest employers within the town are Sudbury Public Schools, Advocates for Human Potential, DSD Labs and Cavicchio Greenhouses. In addition, there are a number of small businesses within Sudbury that provide significant opportunities for its residents. From accounting professionals to law offices and from retail shops to grocery stores, it is apparent that local Sudbury residents support their local businesses.
Sudbury is well know for the Wayside Inn which may well be the country’s oldest operating inn dating back to 1716. The inn was build and run by the the Howe family until Henry Ford bought it in the min 1920s. Following his purchase of the inn, it was restored and donated to a charitable foundation which continues to operate the inn today. You can experience centuries of history by dining in or staying overnight at the inn. The inn offers opportunities to learn about the Howe family and about Henry Ford’s efforts to maintain this piece of living history.
Beyond the Wayside Inn, Sudbury is chocked full of activities. The Rail Trail provides an opportunity to walk, run or bike along a 25 mile route stretching from Lowell to Framingham. Those interested in the arts can find unique jewelry, paintings, woodworking and more at the local artisan markets. For those looking for a little more excitement, Sudbury is also home to Boston Paintball.
Sudbury’s eclectic mix of historic buildings and homes coupled with a vibrant small town community feel make it a very desirable community to call home.
