MetroWest Villages & Towns - Wellesley

Settled in the 1600’s, Wellesley wasn’t actually called Wellesley but rather was a part of Dedham. Following that, the area became a part of West Needham and it wasn’t until the residents of West Needham voted to secede from Needham in 1880 that the area became known as Wellesley.

Wellesley is a small town geographically covering just ten square miles and is home to nearly 31,000 people. Bordered by Newton, Weston, Needham, Natick and Dover, Wellesley is comprised of several distinct neighborhoods each with its own flair. Due to its early development, Wellesley boasts a significant number of pre-World War Two homes making it one of the older more historic towns in Massachusetts.

Interestingly, Wellesley, according to Neighborhood Scout(1), has more artists, designers and people working in media than 90% of the communities in America. This has certainly helped to shape the culture in Wellesley. Events like Wellesley’s Wonderful Weekend which occurs each May and the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra which offers regular concerts are just examples of the artistic culture within Wellesley.

Wellesley is home to Wellesley College, Babson College and Massachusetts Bay Community College. These educational institutions provide an influx of students to the area fueling local businesses with an abundance of talented summer interns. This, of course, helps our MetroWest area businesses enhance product and service offerings and strengthens our community as a whole.

Despite the high percentage of people working from home in Wellesley, rail service, which started back in 1833, and subsequent highway infrastructure make Wellesley a very commuter friendly town. Access to Boston via the Commuter Rail is both quick and convenient.

From a real estate perspective, Wellesley is one of the most appealing towns in Massachusetts. This is due in large part to exceptional public schools coupled with the town’s proximity to Boston. As of this writing, the median home value was just a shade over $2 million in Wellesley. This is skewed somewhat by Cliff Estates which has a current median price of $3.5 million. There are an abundance of restaurants, cafes and retail shops throughout Wellesley adding both character and a village feel to neighborhoods.

Overall, Wellesley is a beautiful eastern Massachusetts town that really has a great deal to offer its residents. From educational excellence to a high end, comfortable and safe suburban way of life, Wellesley in among the most desirable places to live in MetroWest.
